MATHEMATICAL WEIGHTING SYSTEM
TO BE USED FOR DISTRICT 1 & 2
2A CLASSIFICATION SCHOOLS ONLY
By Ted House,
(In conjunction with District 1 & 2 Athletic Directors)
District 1 and District 2 are home to 14 schools in the 2A
classification, involving four leagues: Northwest Conference,
Cascade Conference, Wesco 3A, and KingCo 2A/3A. Because they all
play league schedules that include teams from multiple
classifications, district Athletic Directors devised a Mathematical
Weighting System (MWS) that assigns a point value for wins in
league play. The end product will be a ranking of teams from 1 to
14, which will be used to seed teams for district tournaments.
MATHEMATICAL WEIGHTING SYSTEM
TO BE USED FOR DISTRICT 1 & 2
2A CLASSIFICATION SCHOOLS ONLY

District 1 and District 2 are home to 14 schools in the 2A classification, involving four leagues: Northwest Conference, Cascade Conference, Wesco 3A, and KingCo 2A/3A. Because they all play league schedules that include teams from multiple classifications, district Athletic Directors devised a Mathematical Weighting System (MWS) that assigns a point value for wins in league play. The end product will be a ranking of teams from 1 to 14, which will be used to seed teams for district tournaments.
The system will be used for volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, and soccer. Soccer will vary slightly because ties will be used. Football will employ its own version of the MWS.
Only wins by 2A teams in conference play will be awarded points. The scale is weighted so wins over 3A teams will be worth a higher point total than wins over 2A and 1A teams. A bonus will be given for wins over teams who finish with a winning record in conference play.
Data will be compiled for approximately half of the conference schedule before district wide 2A standings will be published. After that, the standings will be updated once a week, until the end of the regular season.
After the first publishing, points awarded for certain wins could change. Here’s an example of a volleyball scenario between 2A league teams, North High and East High:
Prior to the match, North has a league record of 3-0, while East is 1-2. North beats East and receives the allotted point total for a win over a 2A team with a sub-.500 record. However, at the end of the season, East finishes with a 7-6 league record. The win by North earlier in the season, will now carry a higher point total, because East is now a plus-500 team.
The reverse would also be true. If East won that match, they would get the allotted point total for beating a plus-.500 team. But, if North finished the year with a sub-.500 record, the point total for that win would be reduced. Only the point total based on the final standings will be official.
FOOTBALL ONLY:
The Football MWS is slightly different. All 14 teams will use the system. However, the NWC will use its eight team 2A league standings to determine playoff seeding for “North” teams. The MWS will be used to seed 2A football teams from the Cascade Conference, Wesco 3A, and KingCo 2A/3A conferences, or “South” teams.
Football’s MWS has the same basic formula, but will also include the cumulative record of all opponents, and wins weighted based on home or away.
The top four from North and South will play off for four state berths in 2016. In 2017, there will be only three state berths. At that time, the MWS will be used to determine the last teams in.
These are the basic guidelines of the MWS. Slight procedural changes could be made as the system evolves.
